Winter readathons I’m doing (and you should too!)

WHADDUP, BLOGOSPHERE!? NaBloPoMo was awesome, I took a breather for about a week, and now I am BACK with renewed energy and READY TO BLOG MY PANTS OFF. Thanks, NaBloPoMo!

I am also ready to READ MY PANTS OFF. I have 4 MORE DAYS LEFT of the fall semester, which means I am free to read whatever the f*** I want for like a month before spring semester starts and I am bombarded once again with schoolwork. So. Fast approaching are 2 great readathons that I plan on participating in, and Imma tell you bout em.

Readathon #1 is the Holiday BookTubeAThon, which is happening December 29-31. I am not a BookTuber, but BookTubeAThons are just so much fun, I can’t resist. The Holiday BookTubeAThon is a shorter version of the regular one that happens in late summer every year. The challenges have not yet been announced for this year’s Holiday BookTubeAThon, but it’s always 3 books in 3 days. So my TBR is still TBD at the moment, but I’ll be sure to post about it more soon!

The next readathon is one I am incredibly pumped for. Hosted by Aentee @ Read at Midnight, the Dumbledore’s Army Readathon runs January 1-15 and is dedicated to diverse books! Not only that, there is also a Hogwarts house points competition involved, so we can all have some friendly reading competition. And now for my DA Readathon TBR! I tried to pick as many books as I could that I own because I own waaaaay too many books I haven’t read. I own 5 out of the 7 books, so I think that’s pretty good! The others I will be getting from my library. Here we go:

El Deafo by Cece Bell

I’m choosing El Deafo because one of my best friends, Anna, is a deaf educator. She had her students read this book (to the protest of some ridiculous co-workers), and her students loved it and found it incredibly inspiring. Anna is such an inspiration to me, and I am always in awe of what she does and has to put up with in her job, working in a place that does not understand (or even give an effort to understand) deaf culture. I’m really looking forward to reading this!

The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie

I bought this book a little less than a year ago. I have not read much literature from Native American voices. I read Alexie’s Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and loved it, so I’m looking forward to diving into his adult stuff.

Life in Motion by Misty Copeland

Several of my books fall into the #OwnVoices category, but this one is actually an autobiography/memoir. Last year, Misty Copeland became the first ever African-American female Principal ballerina at the American Ballet Theater, which is a huge deal. She has also brought ballet more into the mainstream spotlight, which I greatly appreciate as a dancer. This book describes how she went from a harsh childhood to being one of the most recognized dancers of our time.

I Am Princess X by Cherie Priest

I bought this a few months ago and I’m jazzed to read it; it’s half novel, half graphic novel, and it’s about a nerdy, kick-ass princess. That’s about all I know about it other than there is no love story component and it’s packed with girl-power. I think the protagonist is Asian-American (though correct me if I’m wrong).

Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel

I bought this along with Fun Home a while ago. I read Fun Home (and ADORED it) and have been dying to blog about it, but I wanted to read this one first so I could talk about them both at the same time. This has been like a year waiting, so now’s the time. (PS – if you didn’t know, Alison Bechdel is a lesbian artist and these are graphic novels about her life. She also invented the Bechdel Test. And a musical was made about the first book.)

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Yes, finally. I know everyone is losing their shit over this book, so it’s time. This is an LGBT book and it’s actually the longest book on my TBR, so I hope I can finish it in time. If you noticed, many of these are graphic novels or just shorter books. Gotta strategize with these readathons, people.

Beyond: The Queer Sci-Fi & Fantasy Comic Anthology edited by Sfe R. Monster

See, another graphic novel! I’m totally psyched for this book that started as a Kickstarter, and now the people behind it are planning more diverse anthologies! I don’t remember how I found out about this book, but I’m assuming it was a book blogger. I know that Naz @ Read Diverse Books posted about it at one point, and that post was what made me actually purchase a copy, so I’ll give him the credit!
