Shout-out the The Orang-utan Librarian for tagging me in the Classics Tag (told you I’d get to it eventually)! Woooo! Let’s be all cultured and shit and talk about the *classics.* I’m even going to leave all the British spellings in the post questions just to feel extra fancy. Lez go.
An over-hyped classic you didn’t really like:
Is there such thing as an “over-hyped” classic? Anyway, I’ve talked about On the Road by Jack Kerouac before and how I wanted to like it but just couldn’t. I actually didn’t even finish it, which doesn’t often happen to me. I’m just not cool enough, apparently.
Favourite time period to read about:
Yikes. I can’t choose between the Georgian and Victorian eras. Don’t make me.
Favourite fairy tale:
Gotta go with the Grimm’s version of Cinderella. I also love the Perrault version, but you really can’t beat the cutting off of the toes and heels and pecking out of the eyes in Grimm.
What is the most embarrassing classic you haven’t read?
There’s an embarrassing list of Shakespeare plays I haven’t read, at the top of which is Othello. I know. Trust me, I know.
Top 5 classics you’d like to read soon:
Moby Dick, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Count of Monte Cristo
Favourite modern book/series based on a classic:
The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. What are you doing with your life if you love classics and don’t also love these books?
Favourite movie version / TV series based on a classic:
Ok, so there are those that are exceptional, but instead of saying the same old ones that everyone agrees are classics in themselves, I’m gonna be realistic. My favorite movie adaptation of a classic is Muppet Treasure Island. There’s really nothing better. I don’t think there’s even a better movie, really.
Worst classic to movie adaptation:
I might need to dodge some rotten veggies on this one, but I am not a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Emma. Emma is my fave Austen novel, so I have real high standards for it, and that movie just lacked.
Favourite edition(s) you would like to collect more classics from:
Penguin Classics! Like the original orange ones. They are SO hard to find in the US, and if you do find them, they’re either titles no one has heard of/cares about, or they are in horrible shape. It’s my quest to own at least a few good ones.
An under-hyped classic you’d recommend to everyone:
Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson. You can read my recommendation post raving about this book if you want to know why I love it. It’s beautiful.
I tag:
…and anyone who loves classics!
HA! I love your choice of best adaptation! 🙂

I am reviewing that shortly on the blog! (I think. It’s hard to remember.) But the Beauty and the Beast one is why I looked up their other offerings! Which sadly appear to be limited to Peter Pan and The Jungle Book right now. 😦

Ooh nice, I look forward to your review! I’m sure they’ll do more. Which version of Beauty and Beast is it?

I really loved reading Peter Pan, it’s a fun read❤ Ah and I’ve finally met a bookie who hasn’t read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! I haven’t too, and I’m hoping to get to it soon😛

Woohoo- glad you did this!! Ahh I actually really agree with you about On the Road- I did not get that book either. So agree with you about the Grimm version- perrault’s is nice and all- but man, cutting off toes and heels is way more memorable!! Ahh so many amazing classics to read- 4 out of 5 of the ones you listed are favourites of mine- and that’s only cos I haven’t read Moby Dick yet and can’t comment on it. Ahh I didn’t think of the Muppets when doing this- NOTHING BEATS THAT MOVIE!!! (“cos when you’re a professional pirate… you don’t have to wear a suit” 😉 ) Emma is my favourite too- but surprisingly, I have low standards for the movie- cos honestly, whenever I watch it, I think “at least it’s not clueless”. Loved your answers so much!!

haha yeah a lot of people like it, while I can’t get passed the fact he’s her stepbrother and she treats him like a brother for half the movie!

My roommate recently had to read Winesburg, Ohio for a class and she absolutely loved it! It’s definitely on my TBR for this summer. Great tag! 🙂

This is great! I’m in complete agreement about On the Road – must not be cool enough for it either. Will definitely be adding Winesburg, Ohio to my TBR (I’m an Ohio girl so can’t believe I still haven’t picked this one up).
