200th post: Beauty and the Beast Book Tag

For my 200th post, how apropos is it to do the Beauty and the Beast Book Tag!? I wasn’t tagged, but after all, I just turned 25, the movie turns 25 in 2 days, and I just finished watching the movie while eating my Belle-themed birthday cake. Also, I pretty much named this blog after the movie. So. Let’s go.

“Tale As Old As Time” – A popular theme, trope, or setting you will never get bored of reading.

Good conquering evil, yo. Pretty much the basis of every story ever but c’mon. It’s that way for a reason.

 Belle – A book you bought for its beautiful cover that’s just as beautiful inside.

I literally only bought the first Artemis Fowl book back in elementary school because it was gold and shiny. Then I ended up absolutely falling in love with the series.

Beast – A book you didn’t expect much from but that pleasantly surprised you.

I gotta say, I was expecting way less from These Broken Stars, the first book in the Starbound trilogy by Aime Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. It was way more complex and relationship-driven than I expected, and well-written to boot.

Gaston – A book everyone loves that you don’t.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I’m constantly using this book as an answer to these sorts of questions, but it’s the main one I think of that most people enjoyed that I really just didn’t.

Lefou – A loyal sidekick you can’t help but love more than their counterpart.

Tiny Cooper from Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I mean, come on. He ended up getting an entire spin-off novel. He’s way beyond “loyal sidekick.” “Sidekick” is an insult.

Mrs. Potts, Chip, Lumiere & Cogsworth – A book that helped you through a difficult time or that taught you something valuable.

Interestingly, it was music that helped me through my hardest times, rather than books. And I learn something from everything I read! One book that taught me a valuable lesson was The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury; it’s an excellent example of how anyone can be alien.

“Something There” – A book or series that you weren’t into at first but picked up towards the end.

Empire Falls by Richard Russo, though I don’t think the term “picked up” really applies. It was more of a, “ok, this book is fine but nothing special” to by the end thinking it was still is one of the best books I’ve ever read.

“Be Our Guest” – A fictional character you’d love to have over for dinner.

Either Elizabeth Bennet because we would literally be best friends, or Lord Henry from The Picture of Dorian Gray because duh.
